Astrophytum caput-medusae, Astrophytum subg. Stigmatodactylus, Standort

The range is located in flat terrain in the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon, at an altitude between 100 and 200 meters above sea level. The substrate is a bright desert ground (Xerosol) with very little organic components. Rocks or stones are not present. The main vegetation consists of dry- or thornshrub. It is very difficult to move in this area looking for Astrophytum caput-medusae. This grows protected by the bushes and without flowers it is optically adapted perfectly to the accompanying vegetation. The number of found plants is specified in the first description with 127 pieces. Some plants could be detected whose wards were nibbled by animals. These harm is probably caused by rabbits.
