Astrophytum ornatum v. mirbelii near Rancho Nuevo, Queretaro

By the dam on the Rio Moctezuma a large population of these beautiful plants were eradicated. There are only remnants on both sides of the river near the former pueblitos Rancho Nuevo and Vista Hermosa, and in the Barranca de Zimapan

The site was located at a left tributary of the Rio Moctezuma. This influx resulted only after heavy rainfall. Astrophytum ornatum v. mirbelii grew on the steep rocky slopes in scorching sun, without shade-giving companion plants. The photos were taken before the dam construction on Moctezuma, the habitat no longer exists in this form.
