Astrophytum ornatum at Rio Torre Blanca, near Peñamiller, Queretaro

The Rio Torre Blanca has its source in Guanajuato and flows a few miles, after crossing the small, friendly town Peñamiller in Queretaro, near Peña Blanca into the Rio Extoraz. There is a very dry southern site with exceptionally helicaly plants. Their growth habit is strong, stocky, with few hairy scales. The spines vary from thin to extremely robust. A specimen with reddish spines was particularly striking (HOOCK, H. 1990 e, 1990 i).
