Introduction to Astrophytum ornatum (DC.) F.A.C. Web. ex B&R

When Ch. Lemaire, 1839, declared the genus Astrophytum with the type species Astrophytum myriostigma, the characteristic star-shaped body was decisive for the naming. After the other species were discovered in the middle of this century it became clear that actually the flakes characterized all the plants together. So it is understandable that it lasted until the year 1896 when Weber, A. described the old Echinocactus ornatus as Astrophytum ornatum.
