Astrophytum Lem. (Cactaceae) Heinz Hoock

Astrophytum asterias in USA
The Rio Bravo river near Taos, Santa Fe (photo)

The Rio Grande in Starr County, Texas, is a tranquil river more like a shallow lake at the time searching for Astrophytum asterias in May. North of Santa Fe, New Mexico, he matches more to his Mexican name "bravo" ("wild, brave"). Here however one does not find Astrophytums.
The buffalo grass is a threat to the existence of Asterias (photo: a dried preparation with flowers from McAllen, Texas, about 20 cm high).
