Astrophytum capricorne v. senile near Villarreal and south of the Sierra de Parras, Coahuila

Distribution and location are the western and south-western Sierra de Parras. There are similar poulations, but not directly related, such at Camaleon, El Hundido and in the Sierra de la Paila. Astrophytum capricorne v. senile grows partially together with Astrophytum coahuilense but natural hybrids have not been found so far. The locations at about 1200 meters above sea level are partly on steep mountain slopes, between towering rock fractures and the more flat foot hills with boulders. The gray calcareous plates are on the surface so strongly ribbed by weathering, that equipped with good hiking boots you can climb slopes with 60 degrees free and stable. Block-like rock parts, crevices, cracks and holes in the ground are the ideal place for snakes, to which one must pay particular attention here when the skies are overcast. The substrate is sandy, loamy and humus with an estimated quantity of less than 5 percent.

Accompanied plants
