Astrophytum capricorne v. aureum at the Sierra de la Paila

Flat, gray limestone formations and the characteristic Chihuahuan Desert flora shape the first 20-30 miles north of the so called Table Mountain. Their appearance here is dominated by the evergreen Gobernadora bushes. Mezquite trees are hardly visible, whereas the many-toothed Ocotillo whips with their conspicuous, paper-bag shaped growth are frequently. Only Yucca carnerosana (Trel.) McKelvey surpasses them considerably in height.

Astrophytum in the Sierra de la Paila lives in a very dry, hot climate with predominantly summer rainfall. In the winter months, the rainfall in January reaches only 10 mm , with average daytime temperatures around 20 degrees Celsius. The temperature variation can be extreme in this time of year. During the night, sometimes freezing point is reached, during the day over 35 degrees Celsius in the shade is not seldom.
