Morphology of Astrophytum capricorne v. niveum

This variety differs from Astrophytum capricorne in particular through its robust construction (body, spines). With a diameter of 15-20 cm the plants reach 40-50 cm height.

Areoles: Distance 4 cm in young plants, later 1-2 cm.

The variable, usually 6-8 spines are sharply angular, 7-9 cm long and directed upward, light yellow to dark black colour, in nature later more gray.

The flocking is dense white, but not as dense as in Astrophytum coahuilense (Moeller) Kayser. New flakes are almost white to bright yellow, never rust-coloured like the type.

The yellow flower with a diameter of (65) -74 - (80) mm has a deep red receptacle, sometimes orange-coloured, very rarely clear yellow. The nectar chamber is protected in contrast to type with no wool-hairs.

Fruit and seed are not different from the type.

Mimicry: limestone (flakes), dry shrubs (thorns).
