The names of Astrophytum

Different names for the very same plant are a permanent outrage for the cactus enthusiast. On the one hand he wants to use the correct names in his collection, on the other hand he sees that even experts quarrel about the right nomenclature. The Astrophytum friend doesn't fare different there. At only five generally recognized species and perhaps a dozen of true varieties or forms, over five hundred synonymous are published!

What is this variety caused through? At first it is the historical incorporation of two different genres in this plant group: Echinocactus Lk. & O. und Astrophytum LEM. Many superfluous names have arisen from the male sex of Echinocactus by an unchanged take-over of the Epitheta into the neuter one of Astrophytum. Frequently they were quoted false by the authors and misprint has crept in different publications. Also the ambition of authors to proof their "innovation" by creating new names is a cause as the reader can recognize by the following lists easily .

At the composition of the synonymous the author who used this name first is cited. If he quotes another and the given literature location wasn't checkable, it is made a note. Essentially these are old, inaccessible sources such as the cactus catalogue of SCHMOLL in 1947 or the work of the Japanese OKUMURA or TSUDA 1933.

For the not only scientific literary work with the synonymous it seemed useful to add the most important trivial names. Every Mexico visitor knows that the natives cannot understand the expression "Astrophytum" but "Peyote" or "Mitra" are common names there. Also the old German, traditional names should not be forgotten (FÖRSTER 1846, RÜMPLER 1886). It were mainly German-speaking researchers, collectors and travellers next to Czechs and Japanese which have made themselves rightful around this genus.

A few hints for the use of the lists:
The synonymous are collected in alphabetically groups of the five species: Astrophytum asterias (ZUCC.) LEM., Astrophytum capricorne (DIETR.) BR. & R., Astrophytum coahuilense (MÖLL.) KAYS., Astrophytum myriostigma LEM., Astrophytum ornatum (DC.) WEB. The genus names and the BEGUIN hybrids of RADL and SCHELLE as well. The attachment "Hort." frequently used earlier means Latin "Hortulanorum" and describes a temporary garden name since the plant seemed still not described valid to this time for the author. A contraction follows every name, which clarifies the more correct classification (table 1). The further data like date and page makes it possible in connection with the literature appendix to deal with the topic more close. At the given extent the listings can be neither absolutely complete nor complete fault-free. All readers are invoked for improvement and addition.
