To the cover picture: Astrophytum capricorne (DIETRICH) BRITTON & ROSE
Astrophytum capricorne (Dietrich) Britton & Rose is spreading over an extensive area in its Mexican native country which one can outline approximately with the geographical triangle Monterrey-Monclova-Torreon. It is adapted to the different locations mimetically excellently and therefore it appears in a large variation of growth. Regarding their eight ribs "Capricorne" behaves, however, very conservatively. Merely after injuries they shoot sometimes with more ribs but reduce the rib-number later again. The plant shown differs from this standard fundamentally. Her trend for a Cristate formation is unmistakable although she still has a dot-like vegetation point. Another evidence for a beginning crest is the increased number and the order of stigmas and filaments. Cristated forms of Astrophytum can be found very seldom and normally only at old specimen in the pure yellow flowering species. None became known of Astrophytum capricorne till now yet.
